LORD'S DAY DESECRATED AT STORMONT
Sundays in Ulster are, sadly, no longer the peaceful and quiet days that once they were, but even by the falling standards of today, any lingering respect for the Lord’s Day seemed to totally disappear in east Belfast on Sunday 25 May when thousands flocked to the grounds of Parliament Buildings for the Red Bull Soap Box Racing event. From late morning onwards, the area around Stormont was taken over by people, cars and loud music. Churchgoers leaving morning services were inconvenienced, and any services or meetings that afternoon could only have taken place with very considerable difficulty and upheaval. We have no objection to the event itself, but why could it not have been held on Saturday or on the next day (Bank Holiday Monday)? Did the organisers conduct an equality impact assessment? Did they consult with local Churches? We intend to seek answers to these and other questions, and we would encourage others to do likewise. The Lord Mayor of Belfast, in responding to criticism of noise and parking problems, said it was only for one day. That’s right, but that day ought not to have been a Sunday.
